Time to double down! Turns out there is more than one way to fruit a block.

Thus, after many hours of YouTube and scrolling through forums, I identified a few trends: There seems to be a lot of love out there for the Martha style tent from small growers. I also noticed strong support for House of Hydro humidity systems from commercial growers.

So that is what I built. This is not a cheap build. The bulk of the cost coming from the humidifer components. This build is designed for use with a few assumptions:. This is an indoor grow build. Temperature Choose a location that has relatively stable temperature throughout the day. Big sudden swings in temperature are bad. Humidity Maintaining humidity is a big factor in the Martha style tent.

Similar to temperature, pick a location that has relatively stable ambient humidity. Pick a room that has a window, or where you are comfortable cutting a hole in the wall for exhaust ventilation. Noise The system makes a minor level of noise as it operates.

Mostly just the sounds of moving air and bubbling water. Use caution if sharing a wall with a bedroom or office. Light Mushrooms enjoy a regular day-night cycle for fruiting. Water optional If you have the option, consider placing the tent near a water line, or running a dedicated line to your tent location. This allows for the humidifier to be adapted with an auto-fill valve, for a set and forget type setup.

I did not do this initially, but will be upgrading later. Some things, like fans, can be substituted with similar parts. My core tent consists of the Martha tent itself, a plastic base, and a shallow perlite tray. The plastic base is for catching any condensation or dripping water, and the smaller perlite tray is for humidity control. Start off by assembling the tent in your desired location.

Nest the perlite tray in the base tray, and slip them under the assembled greenhouse tent. Cut out a similar hole at the bottom of the tent for exhaust output. Attach the diffusing ventilation ports to the two openings. Ensure that the diffusers are open and allowing air to flow. You can adjust these to tweak how air flows through the tent. This can be simulated with a T5 florescent lamp and a timed power strip. Plug the light into the timed power strip on the timed side.

Perhaps the most important and costly aspect of this build is the humidity system. Hands down The House of Hydro has the best gear for building a custom humidifier. I picked up the mist maker, humidistat, and humidity controller as well. Most everything else can be picked up at a hardware store or Amazon.

Using a rotary tool, knife, or other sharp object, cut two 4-inch hole in opposing corners; One is for air intake, while the other is for mist output. Many moons ago, button mushroom growers discovered that adding a layer of organic material on top of the compost could have a huge impact on yield.

In basic terms, a casing layer is a layer of moist material — either organic, inorganic, or a combination of the two — placed on top of a colonized substrate prior to fruiting. The main function of the casing layer is to aid with moisture retention in the substrate. Some casings also contain biological components, microorganisms that are necessary for fruitbody formation in some species. Colonized substrates exposed to the environment have a tendency to dry out rapidly if the humidity falls below a certain threshold.

Even small fluctuations in humidity can prevent a fruiting block from achieving a full and even pinset. A casing layer is able to provide a consistently humid environment at the interface of the substrate and the environment where pins formwhich can often make up for less than ideal environmental conditions.

Once the mushrooms pin completely- and start to develop into more defined fruitbodies that protrude through the casing- they are less susceptible to fluctuations in humidity. Casing layers do involve an extra step in the growing process, which means more time and resources to get the job done. Since not all mushrooms really benefit from a casing layer, using one can sometimes be counterproductive.

They can also be susceptible to contamination, especially in fruiting environments with limited amounts of fresh air. Typically, casing layers used for moisture retention should be either pasteurized or treated with hydrated lime in order to ward off contamination.

For certain species, such as Wine Caps Stropharia rugosoannulata the casing layer should only be lightly pasteurized- in order to retain the beneficial bacteria that is necessary to initiate fruiting. Eventually, any casing layer will contaminate if it remains moist for long enough — but the grower should be able to get a number of flushes before this happens in most situations. Many different materials can be used for a casing layer- including garden soil, sphagnum moss, coco coir- but the most commonly used is material for casing is peat moss.

Peat moss is cheap and widely available, and is excellent at retaining moisture. Another excellent casing material is vermiculite. Vermiculite is an inorganic material typically added to soil to help potted plants retain moisture.

Field capacity is kind of hard to define- but it basically means that the mix has just the right amount of water in it- not too dry, but not completely drenched. What You Need 5 gallon pail or large container Polypropylene bag Large pot or pressure cooker Temperature probe optional Vermiculite Peat moss. Add Peat Moss and Vermiculite in a large container, mixing bowl or 5 gallon pail.

If you are unable to squeeze out any water, it is too dry.

Your Very Own Dedicated Dial-In Number

You want to be able to squeeze the mixture as hard as you can, and only have a few steady drops come out. There is not much nutrition in a mix of peat moss and vermiculite, so full sterilization is not necessary.

That being said, any casing layer is prone to some form of contamination, so it is generally a good idea to pasteurize it before applying to the top of the block.Log in or Sign up. What is your monotub fruiting strategy? I know that everyone has their own pet procedures for success, and was hoping to get some opinions.

I've read that some people remove the polyfill entirely from one hole until pins are seen and then replace it loosely. Others loosen all polyfill but never actually remove it. I went with the second route and manually fanned the tub twice per day. Results were good, but i am always looking to learn and improve. Any difference in technique for PE vs. Last edited: Oct 21, PE-n-hedOct 21, Victor Haze likes this. Guess I'll go ahead and pull one polyfill out today and try to initiate pinning.

Joined: Jan 1, Messages: An interesting quote I read on the shroomery I don't use holes in my tubs anymore. I leave the lid cracked about a half an inch during the day, and close it up at night.

How To Soak a Monotub - MycoQuickie Ep. 1

When I say I "leave the lid cracked" I mean that instead of putting the lid on the tub so it's closed, I move the lid off center by about a half an inch. The way my lighting is set up, is the bulb above each tub is about 6 inches away.

Thuna wari anouba

This creates warmer air inside the tub than outside the tub, which in turn creates convection currents within the tub. So during the day it gets, more or less, constant fresh air while still maintaining a very high RH RH is controlled by the size of the gap created by having the lid offcenter I've stopped modifying my tubs for a couple of reasons, the first being that once I've modified them with holes and whatever else, they become kind of single purpose, in that I can't really use them as regular tubs anymore for things like storage.

Second, they look weird as hell and are hard to explain to people asking why I've got tubs with holes all over the place. Third, I've found great success not putting holes in them Fourth, moving a lid back and forth is a lot easier than messing with "polyfill density". What I mean is, it's hard to accurately measure from one grow to the next "how dense the polyfill was" the last time when you had a good grow.

The offcenter lid method is easily measurable I may try this, seems a lot easier than most methods. Joined: Jun 13, Messages: Location: islandia. Joined: May 22, Messages: Location: Earth.First trip? What psilocybin mushrooms grow in my area? Identification resources.

A simple guide to growing mushrooms using the BRF technique. What went wrong with my monotub? I'm not really sure if the cottonball mycelium is normal. It seems to keep growing larger and larger over time. For details, I've kept it in a dark, humid room for about a month now.

It gets good humidity, and decent temperature. I'd say it fluctuates from F, varying from daytime and nighttime. I guess I have already given up hope on this monotub, but I want to know what I did wrong so I can avoid the same mistakes.

As for the mushrooms that did grow, the very big one grew first, very irregularly. I didn't even really see it pin, it was just there one day, then the others grew similar to that one. Does anybody have any insight or clarity they can kindly provide me with? Don't get so discouraged. The white fluffy stuff might not be contamination but more likely mycelium pushing through the soil into a very humid environment allowing it to grow that evenly and fluffy. If I were you, I would case that puppy or remove the lid now check to see if the polyfill is too compact making it hard to get fresh oxygen.

I see no reason why your monotub wouldn't be able to function normally. Why would you remove the lid to induce fruiting conditions? The whole point to a monotub is so you can set and forget. I also really hope you arent using soil for cultivation indoors.
