Buildzoid is not a qualified board engineer and bases his misinformed opinions on the visible trace layer. Quite a few users with WHEA errors on 1. Usually when the additional eps header is optional, it is written as such in the manual, none of the x boards i have read indicate it as optional and all of them have connecting both in the troubleshooting sections.

In those cases, you could put one half of 8-pin EPS to 4-pin and other half to 8-pin. Board would operate all the same And would have absolutely no way of telling how it is powered.

If the powersupply only has one 12V rail, everything is coming from the same place so all you are doing is balancing the load across the leads and as long is it's not higher than what the wires themselves can handle, which I can't imagine it would be, you're fine. If the powersupply has multiple 12V rails, then the load would be balanced across them which may lead to better stability but I honestly doubt it makes a difference on a decently sized powersupply.
None of the Asus boards I use have the 8 plus 4 connectors, they just have the 8-pin and if I use them with a PS that only has a single 4-pin plug, I just use that and all works fine. You can get converters for most anything.
Ah so I would need both of these for the Prime Pro? Do they sell these in the UK. Are these only required if I overclock?
I have read mixed matticles on this as some people say that it is required to regulate the processor voltage. Ah I see thanks for explaining that.
I will get a good power supply. Probably Corsair still but that has saved me a fair amount of money so thanks so much. To add, if you didn't know pcpartpicker. But the most important feature is it price checks major vendors, so you don't have to. Big fan of Corsair, I've used a LOT of their stuff the last couple of builds, but Seasonic is currently the power supply to the stars. I'm so old school, I still had Antec's on the shelf for spares.
Thanks for the advice. Those Seasonics look great and you can get a platinum for the price of a Corsair gold. Definitely interested. Yes, I had plenty of cabling for all the available power sockets - more cabling than I knew what to do with, in fact! I also erroneously thought I wouldn't need water cooling, had to order an additional Corsair Hx that I still haven't got around to installing.

Had to get a new PSU, not sure I was just unlucky or if this is a requirement. Manual says to have all connections fitted. On the other end I found some cases of people using this board unable to post or general instability due to not plugging in the 4 pin CPU power. This puts me in a dilemma on deciding whether to get this board or not. However at page 33 it does states:. Make sure that all the power cables are securely connected to a proper ATX power supply to ensure stable operation of the motherboard.
Got the board yesterday. You don't need the 4 pin CPU power connector. It boots fine with just the 8 pin one. According to Buildzoid it's just a marketing feature without any real world use. There's also a new beta BIOS on the ftp server, which came out 2 hours ago.
No, my system is stable with vA0 and I don't wanna risk it. I believe there is a way to back up the current bios. I wish I did this before going to the latest one on their site because I was boosting up to 4. It has the correct name. But I haven't tested it myself. So don't install it if you're not confident.

I flashed this, and it's worked. Buildzoid said the extra 4 pin is absolutely not needed. I think there is a video on Gamers Nexus channel where he describes that motherboard. Yes i watched that video too. Yet after reading several cases of people not posting, really gives me the doubts. I was astounded myself when I realized my PSU was missing the connector, but I decided to not care about it and run it anyway. Can't say that my B Carbon Pro gave m any headaches with just the 8-pin on my X.
I have a feeling that the second connector was very important at one point, AMD motherboards started including it on their motherboards a long time ago and I guess it's just one of their things now. Knowing that an 8-pin for the GPU can handle Watts and that seems to be very conservative for the wires and connectors usedany desktop CPU under normal circumstances will be alright with the 8-pin alone.
Of course, we're not talking about LN2 over clocking here. It is dependent on the gauge of wire used but the EPS12V cable should be able to provide at least 28 amps 7 amps per wire at 12V which is W. Your 8 pin PCIe cables should be able to provide up to W of power with no problems too. Thanks for your reply.
Since I would expect Watts to send my X into a panic shutdown due to high temperatures, I'll be good with the 8-pin connector alone. You can melt any CPU with the amount of juice that one plug can deliver, so it absolutely is not important. Buildzoid agrees in any video he does about a mobo that has more than one 12V CPU power connector.

What i have said though is it all depends on how good your PSU is. My concern would be that if someone was to build a system with a single 8pin supply from a crap PSU that couldn't provide a stable supply, on higher end CPU's it could result in system instability. I think motherboard manufacturers probably think the same way so stick 2 cpu headers on. For one thing i can't think of a single total crap psu that can supply 2x8pin cpu and for another, if one segment was to, for some reason go faulty there is redundancy.
That's the only reason i can think of there being 2 headers, at least on mid to low end boards. The CPU only takes what it needs. The plug isn't giving out full current all the time, you won't melt it. It's actually more than enough. I've been using a decent Watt PSU for an overclocked Vega 64, a 95W ik and a custom water loop with zero issues.
Peak power draw I ever saw at the wall was something like Watts, so there still was plenty of headroom with that configuration.
In addition to what everybody else said, get a reputable brand PSU, too. You don't need the Platinum or Titanium rated models, but super cheap PSUs tend to fail sooner, often do not meet the rated power output, and may not have adequate protection circuitry.
The different certifications bronze, silver, gold are how energy-efficient they are, and consequently, the better certification grades can run a little cooler, too. So if the price difference is not a big concern, I recommend looking at gold certified PSUs. Finally a semi modular or fully modular PSU can be easier to manage cables because you won't have a bunch of extra cables in your case.
